Parts of Speech
Use these to help you with your weekly Word Work!
Noun – a person, place, or thing. (eg. cheese, sock, Calgary)
Verb – an action word (eg. walk, talk, think)
Adjective – a word that describes a noun (eg. beautiful, small)
Adverb – a word that describes a verb (eg. slowly, quickly)
Pronoun – a word used instead of a noun (eg. I, you, he, she, it)
Conjunction – joins two words, phrases, or sentences together (eg. but, so, and, because, or)
Preposition – usually comes before a noun to join it with another part of the sentence (eg. on, in, by, with, under, through, at)
Slang/Informal – these are typically #DBL words (eg. stuff, swag, yo)
Prefix – a short series of letters at the beginning of a word that change the word’s meaning (eg. antihero (anti-), unusual (un-))
Article – introduces a noun (eg. the, a, an)
Abbreviation – a shortened word (eg. Thurs., etc.)
